Aboriginal Families Study: prospective cohort study

The Aboriginal Families Study is a research study that invited over 300 women who gave birth to an Aboriginal baby in South Australia between July 2011 and June 2013 to talk about pregnancy and birthing care, and the support that they had from services before and after the baby was born. Two waves of follow-up have been completed to date, with a third wave of follow-up planned when the study children are 14-16 years of age.

Data Retention

Retention period: 2038; Destruction plan: Plans for data destruction will be determined in consultation with the study's Aboriginal Governance Group. Our ethics approval specifies that no data will be destroyed until the youngest participant is aged 25 years. This will be in 2038. In addition, data will be a minimum of 7 years after the last participant was involved, and a minimum of 5 years from the date of any publication or public release of the work. It is not possible to schedule the date at which data will be destroyed due to the longitudinal design of the study. Wave 3 follow-up is planned in 2026-2028, when the study children will be aged 14-16 years. It is likely that at least one more follow-up will be scheduled. This will also impact decisions regarding the timing and methods of data retention/destruction. In principle, decisions regarding the timing and methods of data destruction will be authorised by the Group Leader (Stephanie Brown) and Principal Investigators (Stephanie Brown and Karen Glover) in consultation with the study's Aboriginal Governance Group.
