The National Allergy Centre of Excellence (NACE) Allergy BioRepository (ALBI): powering prevention, diagnosis, and management of allergic disease through discovery research at scale.
Australia is known as the allergy capital of the world. Allergies are rising in Australia at a rapid rate and is becoming a major issue for our community yet there isn't sufficient research with an allergy focus to close the knowledge gap and provide greater education and to guide health professionals on the best way to treat and prevent many aspects of allergic disease. This is because allergies can be difficult to study as they are unpredictable as to when and where they can or will occur. A Parliamentary Inquiry in Allergy and Anaphylaxis in 2019 arrived at 24 recommendations to improve research, education, management and outcomes for people living with allergic disease nationally. In July 2022, the National Allergy Centre of Excellence was formed as Australia's peak allergy research body to build tools and resources to accelerate allergy research and improve lives of Australians living with allergic disease. To achieve this, NACE is building a national Allergy Biorepository to be known as ALBI.
ALBI will harness the power of big data analysis to drive research to understand what factors lead to allergies. By combining allergy information collected from allergy studies across Australia in a single data platform, we can better access information, answer questions and close the knowledge gaps. The BioRepository platform is like a big, organised safe and secure storage system for research information collected from people taking part in allergy projects that can be used by allergy researchers in the future. This will accelerate our research and understanding about allergies that will benefit patients, researchers, healthcare professionals, and wider allergy community.
